Introducing a mega-disperser for the paint industry

In paint manufacture, obtaining a homogeneous, high-quality dispersion is essential to ensure high-performance finished products. To achieve this, the power density diffused into the liquid required for mixing is very high. To meet this unusual requirement, AGITEC has developed a mega-disperser that can be used in an ATEX environment, with a power density of 15 kW/m3. This large-scale device offers high-quality dispersion and improves the production efficiency of the customer for whom it was developed.

OUR CUSTOMER'S NEEDS

Paint manufacturers are faced with various difficulties when mixing liquid components that may be loaded with organic and/or metallic solids. The dispersion of the liquids must be perfectly homogenous. Our customer's requirements were specific in that they needed to obtain a minimum peripheral speed of around 25 m/s. This speed gives a very high shear rate. In addition, in the specific case of this application, it was necessary to disperse a metallic filler in a solvent-based liquid in an ATEX environment.

THE AGITEC SOLUTION

AGITEC, a manufacturer of agitators, has designed a tailor-made technological solution perfectly suited to the customer's specific and innovative processes. The solution includes turbines of the Dispersion or Defloculeuse type.

These mobiles require high peripheral speeds to achieve their efficiency (from 15 to 25 m/s). These dedicated mixing tools are used, among other things, to manufacture paints and varnishes of different viscosities.

This 355 kW ATEX disperser is fitted with an 850 mm diameter dispersion turbine installed on a 20 tonne batch production tank (approximately 25 m3). As the mechanical forces generated by this mixer are very high, we have developed a specific 'high-speed' guide turret. The guide is lubricated by a central oil system equipped with a liquid/liquid cooling exchanger.

In order to install the agitator on the tank, the customer had to cut out its roof to accommodate the agitator head, which is over 4 metres high. This project was carried out in close collaboration with the boilermaker SOTECH, who incorporated the significant mechanical forces generated by the agitator into its calculation notes.

THE ADVANTAGES OF A MEGA-DISPERSER

Drawing on its many years of experience and expertise in the manufacture of agitation machines, AGITEC develops standard and customised solutions that offer the advantages sought by manufacturers in a variety of cutting-edge sectors. The main benefits are high dispersion quality, increased production efficiency and the versatility of the solutions offered.

High-quality production thanks to homogeneous dispersion.

The efficiency of the turbines and a power density of 15 kW/m3 mean that the liquids are dispersed perfectly, whether or not they are laden with solvents and/or a metallic filler. The final result is uniform. Stability is excellent, as are the mechanical and rendering properties.

IMPROVED PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY

The power density and large size of the tank used to disperse the liquids mean that large volumes of paint can be processed. This increases production capacity. The reduction in equipment cleaning time improves efficiency and reduces production costs.

The new mixers are equipped with automated functions to control dosages, temperatures and dispersion parameters. As a result, procedures are more precise and reliable.

THE ADAPTABILITY AND VERSATILITY OF MEGA-DISPERSERS

Whatever the viscosity of the liquids to be dispersed, mega-dispersers are there to help. This makes it possible to produce different types of paint, from the simplest to the most technical: water-based paints, solvent-based paints or paints loaded with organic and/or metallic solids.
